1871 Ulysses S. Grant Indian Peace Medal. Silver. Julian IP-42, Prucha-53. Choice Very Fine.63.4 mm. 1511.0. grains. Pierced for suspension, as issued, with noticeable wear in the piercing as typical of a worn medal. Similarly, many small nicks, scratches and marks are seen on both sides, alongside an edge bump near 4 oclock relative to the obverse. These are all customary signs of a Peace medal being used as intended, distributed to and worn by a prominent Native American. Cleaned to a fairly consistent light silver gray.<p>The U.S. Grant medal is the most available Peace medal in the entire series of silver originals, but demand seems to only be increasing for them, perhaps perceived as low-hanging fruit and a good entry point into this series. Whatever the case, prices have been higher in recent years than ever before, and these seem to finally be getting the attention they have long deserved. Your cataloger has accounted for 60 distinct medals. This is among those struck on the lighter weight standard, and probably predates 1873 in terms of actual production and distribution.
