DENMARK. Penny, ND (1137-1146). Roskilde Mint. Eric III (Erik Lam). NGC Chipped.Hauberg-2; Hauberg Collection-(cf. 1408); Bruun-2220 (illustrated); Weight: 0.50 gms. The only two types struck during this reign are both excessively rare and when trying to collect a complete numismatic run of Danish monarchs, Eric III has always been very difficult to obtain.
The nickname of the king "Lam" means "lamb" and signifies that he was considered a pious man. Until 2024 when Queen Margrethe II gave the throne to her son, Frederik X, Eric III is the only king on the Danish throne to voluntarily abdicate when he in 1146 decided to become a monk in the Abbey of St. Canute. From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
