DENMARK. 2 Ducats, 1673. Copenhagen Mint. Christian V. NGC AU-58.Fr-198; KM-346; Hede-3; Sieg-118; Schou-7. Weight: 7.04 gms. A fabulous example of this scarce type, always popular thanks to the pachyderm design element. A rich golden coloration is highlighted by a bold luster. Only some light friction is noted with a glass as you look this double ducat in a light. Sharply impressed from the dies, the details are crisply defined and there are no distracting signs from handling to be noted, though a tiny planchet clip at 3 oclock is noted for accuracy. The Castle topped elephant design represents Denmarks highest order of chivalry and has been used since the late Middle Ages. A similar example from our September 2024 sale of the L.E. Bruun Collection, Part I, lot 1102, realized a hammer price of 20,000 Euros and no doubt this beauty will realize a similar price.
