CANADA. Bank of Toronto. 50 Dollars, 2.2.1920. CH #715-22-76. PMG Very Fine 20.Typed Henwood signature at left. The highest denomination issued by the Bank of Toronto and a deceptively difficult note to find in any grade. This particular example has long been in the registry, tracing its pedigree back to a 1970 Torex sale, now over half a century ago. It has since been graded in PMG Very Fine 20 and was offered again at the 2021 RCNA sale. We are now happy to once again offer it to the collecting community. While a small erasure is seen at right, this is not unusual, and even the Charlton catalog states "Most of the existing $50 notes have counting number erasures". It is rather minimal on this example, and PMG does not even mention it on their holder. The Bank of Toronto was an interesting name choice for a bank focused on the more rural areas of Ontario. It opened for business in 1856 and would continue until the mid-1950s when it merged with the Dominion Bank to form the TD Bank.
