FRANCE. Constitution. Gilt Bronze 2 Sols Token Muled with Two Reverse Dies, "Year 1/1792" (1793). Birmingham (Soho) Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63. cf. Maz-332 (for rev.). Plain edge. By A. Dupré possibly for the Monneron Brothers. Weight: 11.90 gms. An strongEXTREMELY RARE/strong muling of the pattern and normal pyramid sides for the eventual Hercules/Pyramid token issue, this stands as the only such mule of the type known to Margolis. Furthermore, about this type, he writes that "em...in addition to AERE PERENNIUS in larger lettering, and two unequal parallel bars beneath it in place of a date, the pattern (or rejected) design has larger, differently shaped, and better defined clouds; the tiny buildings in the background, including what is obviously the famous/em Halle aux Bleds emon the extreme left, are somewhat differently shaped and more clearly defined than on the normal design. Careful examination of this normal obverse indicates that it has been slightly polished down, the PU being especially weak, as well as the C of GALLLICA. There are numerous indications of having been struck from a die with rust spots, especially in and around GALLICA. The pyramid and clouds being in higher relief than on the normal die, may have been the reason for its rejection. The pattern obverse is in better shape, with no discernible evidence of having been struck from a rusty die; the lettering is sharp except for a few letters, especially the R of PERENNIUS./em" From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Phil Keller on 22 March 1995).pEx: Virgil M.
