FRANCE. Constitution. Uniface Copper Obverse Trial for 2 Sols Token, ND (1793). Birmingham (Soho) Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63. cf. Maz-332a (for full strike); Margolis (1988), pl. 31, 13 (this trial illustrated). Plain edge. By A. Dupré possibly for the Monneron Brothers. Weight: 16.21 gms. strongEXCEPTIONALLY RARE/strong and a possibly strongUNIQUE/strong uniface trial, Margolis writes that "em...the design on this trial piece was originally prepared by Augustin Dupré in 1776 (see his drawing in the Musée Carnavalet, reproduced in Saunier, 11) and was subsequently used for the obverse of the Monnerons Hercules 5 Sols tokens of 1792. The somewhat rusty die from which this piece was struck, and its decidedly Soho mint "look" or fabric, strongly suggest the possibility that Duprés original die was sent to England where it was struck at the Soho Mint in 1791 or 1792 to produce this trial piece, the design of which became the prototype for the Hercules 5 Sols./em" From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Glendining on 22 November 1979).pEx: Glendining (11/1979) Lot # 483.
