COLOMBIA. Ferrocarril del Cauca. 10 Pesos, 9.4.1897. P-S1551r. DP 2351. Remainder. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Regional railroad issue. Issued to finance the construction of a railroad between Cali and Buenaventura (also known as the Ferrocarril del Pacifico) in a remote part of the country. Lovely vignette of a man with dove at left (although our identification of the bird may be incorrect). These notes paid 8% interest and were redeemable after a specific section of the railroad was completed. Like all such railroad issues extremely rare in any format and seldom offered. In fact, in our exhaustive archive of Colombian paper money we have never previously offered a note from this issuer. A glance at the PMG population report reveals that this is the only note of this issuer presently graded (besides this 1897 issue, there were also various other issues over the next two decades). An incredible rarity and of interest to Columbian collectors and those interested in railroad history. PMG comments "Previously Mounted, Tear." From the Gran Colombia Collection.
