An exceptionally preserved example of this elusive medal with superb relief in the bust and reflective gloss in the fields.<p><em>Charles George Gordon was an accomplished British Army officer who participated in the Crimean War, but made his reputation in China in the 1860s where he was placed in command of the Ever Victorious Army, a unit of Chinese soldiers who were largely credited for putting down the Taiping Rebellion. After these successes, he was given the nickname Chinese Gordon and received honors from both the Emperor of China as well as the British. Gordon went on to spend time in Egypt and later became Governor-General in Sudan. After returning to Europe in the 1880, he again returned to Khartoum in 1884 to secure soldiers and civilians in the midst of revolt. For nearly a year, he organized a defense of the city until it finally fell, with Gordan being killed in the process.</em>
