Undated (1766) William Pitt Medal. Betts-516. Silver. AU-58 (PCGS). 40.11 mm. If the Choice Mint State example of this Betts number in the preceding lot proves elusive, this PCGS-certified Choice AU deserves serious consideration. It is a supremely attractive specimen for the assigned grade, both sides fully defined with just the barest trace of friction to isolated high points. The finish is a tad muted, but primarily due to the richness of toning that blankets both sides in dominant mauve-gray. More vivid highlights of steel-olive and cobalt blue outline Pitts bust and the lettering on both sides - very attractive. Smooth in hand and free of troublesome blemishes, this piece presents far better than many low end Uncs for the type that have appeared in our sales over the years. Worthy of a strong bid.
