COLOMBIA. Cob 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1705-22). Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Philip V. NGC VF-35. EMO-126 (Plate coin); KM-B7; cf. Cal-103; Restrepo-Unlisted. Weight: 0.87 gms. Variety with corded border. A deeply toned Cuartillo with well-presented depictions of the castle and lion along with much of the distinctive border design. Quite wholesome and certainly among the finest examples extant for this EXTREMELY RARE type. An exciting offering for advanced collectors of Colombian colonial issues.

Research by Herman Blanton draws a distinction between two types of these Bogota Cuartillos with ornate borders: this corded border and a more embellished trefoil type. Attempts to match the castle and lion to punches found on 8 Reales issues were unsuccessful, but because the trefoil design matches up quite closely to the security edge used in later milled issues, Blanton surmises that they emanate from the time of Ferdinand VI. As for this simpler corded-border type, loose attribution to the first reign of Philip V is the best guess based on similarities to the borders found on 1721-dated 8 Reales. To view all items from the EMO Collection, click here. From the EMO Collection.

Ex: Baldwins Auction 68 (09/2010), Lot # 4016 (Hammer price: 4200 GBP).
