COLOMBIA. Cob 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1700-04). Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Philip V. NGC VF-30. EMO-117 (Plate coin); KM-B7; Cal-103; Restrepo-M53. Weight: 0.89 gms. Variety with solid peripheral ring and border of pearls on reverse. A beautiful minimalistic Cuartillo. The obverse castle presents much more boldly than typically encountered on cruder examples. Though the reverse is off-center, this characteristic allows for a clear view of the ring and pearls bordering the die. Factoring in its wholesome charcoal gray surfaces, it will be no surprise to see eager bidding for this lot.

While identified on the holder as belonging to the earlier emission of 1/4 Reales under Philip IV, Restrepo notes that this distinctive style of castle comes from punches used in 8 Reales issued posthumously for Charles II during the first years of the reign of Philip V. To view all items from the EMO Collection, click here. From the EMO Collection.
