Weedsport, New York. 1902 Plain Back $5 Fr. 606. The First NB. Charter #11020. PMG Choice Very Fine 35 EPQ. Serial Number 1.Hailing with the coveted Serial Number 1, this note is an exceptional rarity with a pristine and fresh appearance. Originating from Weedsport, a town nestled in Cayuga County, New York, this note carries with it a slice of history. Long before European settlers made their mark, the region was home to indigenous tribes. The village of Weedsport, established in 1831, boasts a deep-seated history intertwined with the 19th-century Erie Canal, a significant catalyst for its development. Remarkably, between 1917 and 1935, Weedsport hosted just a single national bank. It issued a limited sum of $25,000, with a mere $660 remaining when it closed its doors in 1935. Today, only 11 notes from this bank are known to exist, including this newly discovered $5 note and its counterpart, a serial number 1 1902 $10 which is in the very next lot. Undoubtedly, these notes stand as some of the most esteemed highlights of the sale.
