1771 Machins Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 4-71C, W-7690. Rarity-7. GEORGIVS III, Group I. Fine Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS). 101.0 grains. A significant rarity in the Machins Mills series with fewer than 10 examples known and they seldom appear at auction. This variety, discovered by Richard August in 1964, combines Vlack obverse 4 (most commonly seen on the 1775 4-75A variety) with a 1771 reverse used only in this combination. This is a very decent specimen with bold legends and motifs. The date is more faint but still partially visible. The steel-brown surfaces show a few scrapes and were burnished to reduce the appearance of modest roughness. Intermediate die state, the break off Britannias neck is somewhat advanced and a rim cud is seen over IA. A rare opportunity and a piece that will significantly advance one specialized collection.
PCGS# 448. To view supplemental information and all items from the Sydney F.
