(ca. Last Quarter of the 19th Century) Composition Impression of a Libertas Americana Medal. Amber Composition. Extremely Fine. 47.9 mm, 13.2 mm thick. Old octagonal label on back hand written in ink LIBERTAS / AMERICANA / 4 JUIL. 1776. Produced in a hardened wax-like composition that is both durable and lightweight. A similar object to a museum cast, impressions like this one were often produced for institutional collections that contained cabinet drawers full of similar pieces. This wasnt used to emboss wax or strike anything, but was simply a decorative, didactic copy of this famous medal. Interesting and attractive. From the Martin Logies Collection.
