1742-Y Sou Marque. Bourges Mint. Vlack-220. Rarity-9. EF-40 (PCGS). 31.7 grains. A boldly struck example with mottled pearl and pewter-gray toning to virtually full silvering. The obverse impression is trivially off center to 2 oclock, hardly worth mentioning, which same could be said for some shallow planchet roughness at the lower left obverse and upper left reverse. Final year of issue for the rare Bourges Mint sou marque series. The 1742-Y has a reported mintage of 40,004 pieces, although none were known to Vlack upon publication of his 2004 reference on the French billon coinage in the Americas. Probably a once in a lifetime offering for the specialist, this important coin is sure to see spirited bidding. PCGS# 919611. To view supplemental information and all items from the Sydney F.
