Indiana. 22nd Indiana Volunteers. Undated (1861-1865) Unknown Sutler. 25 Cents. Schenkman IN-22-25B (IN-E25B), W-IN-180-025b. Rarity-8. Brass. Plain Edge. MS-63 (NGC). 22 mm. Warm golden olive surfaces with just a trace of superficial spotting on the obverse, but none that appears threatening. Well struck with sharp details and soft original luster which adds to the visual appeal. The largest of three denominations known for the issuer, and all are considered Rarity-8. This is the plate token for both editions of Schenkman. Though graded only one point higher, it is considerably nicer than the MS-62 example we offered in our February 2015 sale - the only one in our online archives, and apparently the only one in the Hayden archives as well. From the Bill Kelly Collection of Civil War Sutler Tokens. Earlier from the David Schenkman and Stephen L. Tanenbaum collections.
