1776 Contemporary Imitation Halfpenny Muling. George III English Obverse Type of 1770-75, George III-era Irish Reverse. Very Fine.82.3 grains. Struck from a different die pairing from the other 1776 English/Irish muling in this sale, this piece exhibits extensive die wear on its obverse, with the legends stretched out towards the rims, a strange area of die failure at Georges chin and neck, and arcing cracks in that area as well. Reverse die is similar worn, and the strike is slightly off-center in a way that puts part of 76 off the edge of the flan. A dark brown and attractive example of this scarce muling. From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Clem Schettino, 2010.
