1775 Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny. George III English Type—Triple Struck—Choice Very Fine.88.5 grains. A fantastic multiply struck coin, with what appears to be three separate strikes that are closely overlapping to the left and right of the initial strike, whichever that may be! The dark chocolate brown, glossy surfaces have a certain softness to them that makes us wonder whether this was struck through a blank planchet or was a brockage maker, both of which would have slightly distorted the designs of a struck coin. Vestiges of at least two sets of dates are visible, giving us 100% confidence that this gorgeous coin is dated 1775.From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Christopher B. Young, 2015.
