1738-A Sou Marque. Paris Mint. Vlack-16, for type. Gold. About Uncirculated, Polished, Countermarked.21.8 mm. 58.4 grains. A most intriguing item, on a thin planchet, so likely a genuine Paris Mint product as opposed to a copy. The variety nicely matches that of Vlack-16, as well, but with the post-striking addition of a diamond-shaped hallmark on the obverse in between the rose and date. Bright light gold surfaces with some pinkish-rose iridescence clinging to the protected areas around some of the peripheral devices. The texture is curiously glossy from numismatic mishandling, lightly pitted under magnification, but with few sizeable blemishes.From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
