ANNAM. Gold 2 Tien, ND (1848-83). Tu Duc. NGC MS-61.Fr-Not listed; cf. KM-424 (silver & different rev. character); cf. Sch-356 (silver); Thierry-V258; cf. Thierry Supplement-496 (silver). Weight: 6.97 gms. Obverse: Nhi Thang; Reverse: Tu Duc Thong Bao. INCREDIBLY RARE with only one other confirmed example struck in gold, this Mint State stunner stands as an incredible survivor of what must undoubtedly have been a rather paltry mintage. Though other gold 2 Tien are known for the reign, the only other example we could locate of this particular design is permanently housed in the Musee des Monnaies et Medailles, France, as part of the tresor de Hue collection (currently on display). The reverse does share a great deal in common with that of KM-424, though the latter is both silver and displays Thang at the bottom instead of Nghi. Accordingly, we expect this exceptional specimen to generate immense enthusiasm and spirited bidding, and should serve as a cornerstone for any advanced collection of Annamese rarities.
