Major General Philip Sheridan is portrayed on the center of the note. Sheridan was a career United States Army officer and one of the most important Union generals during the Civil War. Sheridans cavalry vigorously pursued Lees struggling army in 1865 and was instrumental in forcing Lees surrender at Appomattox, effectively ending the war.
