1878-S Liberty Head Half Eagle. AU-50 (PCGS).A frosty and generally boldly defined AU-50 example that offers vivid color in bold honey-rose. Half eagle production at the San Francisco Mint increased markedly in 1878 with a mintage of 144,700 pieces. Unfortunately for todays collectors, this increase in mintage did not result in a generous supply of quality survivors. Most examples saw extensive commercial use, and even attractive coins at the About Uncirculated level are elusive.
