1851-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 31-V. AU-50 (PCGS). CAC.An exciting example of the issue, this is an original AU coin with even orange-olive color and appreciable luster on both sides. The strike is quite soft along Libertys brow and at the bottom of the eagle, yet bold for most other focal features. Although a mintage of 62,710 pieces is generous for the issuing mint, the 1851-D is scarce and underrated in todays market. According to Southern gold expert Doug Winter (2013), this is the fifth rarest of 26 issues in the Dahlonega Mint five-dollar series.
