1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Large Planchet. Noe-4.5, Salmon 4-D, W-720. Rarity-6+. Without Pellets at Trunk, Reversed Ns. AU-53 (NGC).73.6 grains. Exceptionally well made on a near-perfectly round planchet, both sides exhibit complete legends where allowed by die state. Beautifully toned, as well, we note iridescent overtones of blue, violet, and gold to a base of warm antique silver-gray. The reverse is clashed within the lower part of the inner circle, where a letter N is most prominent off the lower left corner of the Roman numeral X in the denomination. Die breaks are noted left of the date and denomination, and from the border to the third stroke of the letter M in DOM. Attenuation to the letter O in DOM and some of the beads inside the adjacent letter M further confirm the rare Noe-4.5 attribution.<p>The Noe-4 and Noe-5 are the two Reversed Ns varieties of the Large Planchet Pine Tree shilling, with one N on each side retrograde. Both are moderately scarce in an absolute sense, although the typical example grades VF or lower. Only six or so Mint State coins are believed extant for the overall Noe-4 attribution, and this beautiful AU qualifies as Condition Census for the late die state Noe-4.5 attribution. An impressive provenance further enhances this coins already awesome appeal.PCGS# 45372. NGC ID: 2ARX.From Heritages sale of the Christopher J.
