1881 Trade Dollar. Proof-66 (PCGS). CAC.A dazzling specimen with swaths of vivid olive-russet and steel-blue iridescence drifting over a base of pearl-gray on the obverse. For the reverse we note steel-blue and burnt-orange peripheral colors around a mauve-gray center. An exacting strike and bold Proof finish further enhance the already outstanding eye appeal.<p>Just 960 Proof trade dollars were struck in 1881, a figure that is down more than 1,000 pieces from the previous years Proof tally. Trade dollars had been phased out of their legal tender status by the end of the series and as a result Proofs were made in large numbers for collectors and speculators, but no coins were struck for general circulation after 1878.
