1807 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-112. Rarity-1. Large Stars, 50/20. AU-58+ (PCGS). CAC.The ultimate collector grade for the first year issue in the popular and widely collected Capped Bust half dollar series. This is an elegant example with blushes of olive-russet and golden-tan iridescence on a base of warm pearl-gray. The strike is unusually well executed for an early half dollar, the borders fully denticulated around both sides and all design elements sharply rendered and crisp. Nearly complete satin luster with an impressively smooth appearance.<p>Always in demand among early half dollar variety collectors, the 1807 50/20 is not only an obvious die preparation blunder that is evident to the naked eye, but it also enjoys its own listing in the popular <em>Guide Book</em> reference on United States coins. What has actually long been termed an errant 2 beneath the 5 in the denomination, however, actually appears to be an inverted but mostly effaced 5 (based on overlays accomplished by John Dannreuther). Walter Breen noted as early as 1988 that "the 2 may be a 5 rotated 180º," though it is unknown if he was the first to thus identify it. Two die marriages are known for this <em>Guide Book</em> variety, employing the same reverse but different obverses. Overton-112 is by far the more common in terms of total number of coins extant, although in the finest circulated and all Mint State grades it is, like all early Capped Bust half dollars, scarce and eagerly sought.PCGS# 6086.
