1787 Massachusetts Half Cent. Ryder 6-D, W-5980. Rarity-5+. EF-45 (PCGS).Handsome copper-brown surfaces are hard, tight and impressively smooth in the absence of troublesome marks. An ancient carbon spot in the lower right reverse field is faint and not readily evident at all viewing angles. Central high point rub is commensurate with the grade, the detail sharp elsewhere, although some of the border denticulation was never present due to the nature of the strike. While some nicer coins are known for this scarce and conditionally challenged variety, namely the pair from Ford and the Norweb coin, Garrett did not have a Ryder 6-D at all and this one is superior to Taylors.PCGS# 296.
