1977 United States Assay Commission Medal. By Philip Fowler, Edward Grove, Frank Gasparro and Matthew Peloso. JK AC-121. Rarity-2. Pewter. MS-66 (NGC).76 mm x 60 mm, oval. This medal is a footnote to the 179-year history of the Assay Commission. Public participation in this group had been abolished by President Carter before the 1977 deliberations. Originals were reportedly distributed by President Carter himself, each medal housed in a plush case. Examples sold to the public were packaged in sealed plastic envelopes and the Mints standard cardboard medal boxes, the latter included with this lot. The obverse features a bust of Martha Washington bust right, in mobcap, from the Mints metallurgical trial pieces of the 1960s. (Total: 1 medal; 1 box)From Craig A. Whitfords sale of the Numismatic Card Company Archive Collection of U.S. Mint Memorabilia, October 1995, lot 12; Kurt R. Kruegers Spring 1986 Americana/Exonumia Auction, lot 4100. Lot tags included.
