1906 William Randolph Hearst Italian Red Cross Recognition Medal. Silver. Extremely Fine.68 mm. 154.8 grams. Eight shallow holes around the edge for mounting in a desktop rotating medal display stand. Hearst (1863-1951) was an American businessman and politician, but was perhaps best known for developing the nations largest newspaper chain. Awarded for his contribution of relief funds after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 1906. The reverse of this very high relief medal is inscribed AI BENEMERITI DELLA CROCE ROSSA ITALIANO around the periphery while a crowned eagle is perched upon a Red Cross emblazoned shield. In the field above the eagle is engraved W. RANDOLPH / HEARST / SOCCARSI DANEGGIATI / VESUVIO 1906. An impressive and important medal.
