1801 (1861-1886) Thomas Jefferson Indian Peace Medal. Bronze. Second Size. By Robert Scot. Julian IP-3. First Reverse. MS-62 BN (NGC).76 mm. With pretty pink and gold undertones to dominant rose and autumn-brown patina. A few wispy obverse blemishes are noted solely for accuracy, including a light scratch in the upper left field. Close inspection reveals considerable light spalling or die rust on both sides, and the sharp, yet thin die crack from 1 oclock on the reverse border into the clasped hands cannot be missed. According to Robert Julian, the original dies for this medal were replaced in 1886, so this piece dates earlier, though precisely how much earlier is unclear.
