BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. Tortola. 4 Shillings 1-1/2 Pence (Half Dollar), ND (1801). George III. PCGS VG-08. M-7; Prid-1. Type I, "TORTOLA" within shaped indent. Issued by local ordinance of 3 February 1801. Countermark applied to the obverse of a 1/2 cut Mexico City portrait 8 Reales of Charles III. A deeply-applied countermark in the neat and readable style of Type 1. The host coin has seen extensive circulation, as is expected from this issue. The surfaces remain quite wholesome, however, displaying a deep grayish-mauve tone with a hint of attractive glossiness. From the David Sterling Collection.
