JOHN I, 969-976. AV Tetarteron Nomisma (4.17 gms), Constantinople Mint. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 1/5. Wavy Flan, Marks, Plugged. S-1791. Obverse: Nimbate bust of Christ Pantokrator facing; Reverse: Facing bust of John, to left, holding long cross, and being crowned by the Theotokos, facing, to right; above, manus dei. This type was often holed for use as a religious pendant due to the bust of Christ on the obverse. The present example exhibits a plug at 12 oclock on the obverse along with numerous minor contact marks, undoubtedly from its use as a pendant. The reverse, by comparison, is quite original. Despite its shortcomings, a presentable example of this beautiful type with only light circulation wear. Ex: Christies New York (5/2/1984), Lot # 548.
