CALIGULA, A.D. 37-41. AE As, Rome Mint, ca. A.D. 37-38. NGC Ch VF. Flan Flaw. RIC-38. Obverse: Bare head left; Reverse: Vesta seated left on ornamental throne, holding patera and scepter. This As displays a great strike on both sides, resulting in an impressive portrait of the notorious Roman emperor. While a flan flaw at 2 oclock on the obverse has obscured a small part of the legend, the coin is fortunately free from the unsightly corrosion, roughness, or smoothing that so often afflict this type. Instead, its surfaces display an elegant even brown patina. An excellent piece to add to a "Twelve Caesars" set.
