1817 Matron Head Cent. N-17. Rarity-4. 13 Stars. VF Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS). Despite the PCGS qualifier, this is actually a fairly smooth and quite attractive example for the grade and variety. Surfaces are deep brown with lighter devices and just faint microporosity visible under magnification. Late die state with noticeable sinking above TATE, seemingly just before that area breaks out into a full cud. A great example of this die state and comes with a nice provenance. PCGS# 36595. From the John McBride Collection. Earlier ex Js Coins, February 1992; John D. Wright, January 2006; McCawley & Grellman, April 2006; Goldbergs sale of the Dan Holmes Collection, May 2010, lot 70; Goldbergs sale of the John Koebert Collection, September 2015, lot 247.
