THRACE. Mesambria. AR Tetradrachm, ca. 250-175 B.C. NGC VF. Scratches. HGC-3.2, 1567; Pr-1013. Struck in the name and types of Alexander III (the Great) of Macedon. Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; Reverse: Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, helmet right; monogram below throne. Struck on a broad flan and attractively toned with hints of iridescence in the fields. A minor area of corrosion, now cleaned, is noted on the obverse rim.
