PANAMA. Banco Central de Emision de la Republica de Panama. 1 Balboa, 1941. P-22cts. Color Trial Specimen. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. Printed by HBNC. This color trial specimen utilized purple, blue and dark maroon ink on the obverse, whereas the issued series utilized green and orange colors. There is an annotation on the left margin stating "green changed by banana oil". Banana oil was used in the early 1900s to treat the fabric covered wings of aircraft, as a lacquer which would weatherproof the material and increase the durability, along with the lifespan. Perhaps the same thoughts were in mind when this note was treated with banana oil. Specimen stamps have been applied twice to the bottom margin on the back. This is the only example to have been graded by PMG for the variety. PMG comments "Printers Annotations". PMG Pop 1/No Others Graded. From the Ellicott Collection.
