CARIA. Islands off Caria. Rhodes. AR Tetradrachm (17.37 gms), Hephaistion, magistrate, ca. 205-190 B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5. HGC-6, 1455; Pr-2522; Ashton-254. In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; Reverse: Zeus seated left on throne, holding scepter and eagle; magistrates name in left field; below throne, PO below strut. Just a hint of off-centering is noted on the reverse of this barely-handled civic issue of Alexanders type. Quite attractively toned and with bold detail throughout, it even retains some enchanting brilliance remaining in the protected areas. Ex: Ulysses Collection (includes original collectors ticket).
