BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1574-76)-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Alonso Rincon (R). Philip II. PCGS VF-35.KM-4.2; Cal-518; Sellschopp-14. Weight: 13.30 gms. An excellent early 4 Reales cob with fine details and attractive cabinet toning. The obverse displays its mintmark, assayers initial, and denomination mark fully and boldly. Each section of the Habsburg shield is fully struck and rather clear, as is the crown above. Thanks to the nearly perfect centering, all of the legend is at least partially present on the flan. Both sides are remarkably well-centered. The reverse fares just as well: the cross, the lions and castles on its quadrants, and the surrounding octolobe are shown are remarkably complete. Even with circulation wear and a few areas of flat striking, this example is a far cry from the crude emissions of later years. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here. From the Pat Johnson Collection.
