An impressive and hulking pattern issue in white metal, this amazing specimen delivers a RARE combination of impressive historical importance and beautiful design. King Ang Duong sought to westernize Cambodia and coinage natural fell into this aspiration. The king contracted with W. P. Hammond and Company in Birmingham, England to produce new machine struck patterns and supply the country with modern minting equipment. In 1852 a local artisan produced ivory mock-ups of the proposed coinage that were sent to Birmingham, which were used to produce these trial strikes in white metal. When the machine was supplied to the Cambodian government, no one had the technical knowledge to set the machinery up. It therefore sat unused, despite being supplied with dies, until it was converted into a hand press by a Thai man who had some knowledge of minting equipment. This Pattern is exactingly struck, with a precise amount of detail being imbued on the flan, and some gentle reflectivity even peering through in the fields. A few hits are noted for completeness, though there is very little to technically fault this piece on. A tremendous survivor, and one that should see no shortage of advanced bidders seeking to add a specimen to their collection, as these types only appear with astonishing infrequency.Ex: Irving Goodman Collection.
