An amazing engraved "Birds Over Junk" Dollar, ones eye is immediately drawn to the engraving on what would normally be the portrait side. The following inscription is given in seven lines: "CHIFU [sic] CHINA U.S.S.B.H. P.E. ATKINSON MAY 8 1937 皮義艾". "U.S.S. B.H." refers to the USS Black Hawk</em> (AD-9), a destroyer in the United States Navy first commissioned for service in 1918. After the First World War, this Destroyer was refitted and assigned to the Asiatic Fleet in 1922. During the course of her assignments, Black Hawk moored in Chefoo (modern Yantai) on May 8th, 1937 to perform refitting duties. The engraving by a sailor named "Atkinson" ties the piece to this exact location and time, and is an incredible historical testament to movements of the ship in the immediate runup to the Second Sino-Japanese War. Black Hawk</em> remained in Chefoo until July 2nd, when she set course for Chinwangtao. During her time in Chinwangtao, The Marco Polo Incident of July 7th occurred, sparking the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, a conflict that would be subsumed into the Second World War. Black Hawk</em> returned to Chefoo thereafter, and later saw service during the Second World War, being decommissioned in 1946. Though well circulated, this example can boast an appeal that is so much beyond the standard "Birds over Junk" type, with a claim to being a legitimate historical artifact. The engraving is still strong, and the surfaces otherwise appear to be free of problems like cleaning. A tremendous Dollar, and one that should be much contested for by the many lovers of historical treasures or unique offerings.
