1853-DERI Octagonal $1. BG-522. Rarity-6+. Liberty Head. AU-58 (PCGS). Much of the semi-prooflike finish to both sides of this handsome piece. The otherwise honey-olive surfaces exhibit blushes of reddish-rose iridescence that provide further appeal. Sharply struck overall with a pleasingly smooth appearance in hand. This type is attributed to maker M. Deriberpie. The first appearance of an example at auction was in Thomas L. Elders sale of the Comstock-Gunther collection (lot 1079) on January 26, 1935. Survivors remain scarce, and this piece is far finer than the Net EF-40 specimen in our (Bowers and Merenas) September 2003 sale of the Jay Roe Collection. PCGS# 10499. NGC ID: 2BLL. PCGS Population: 10; 4 finer (MS-62 finest).
