Undated (June 1964) General Motors Roller Press Experimental Cent. Judd-Unlisted, Pollock-4054. Rarity-8. Copper. Plain Edge. MS-62 BN (PCGS). 20 mm. 63.8 grains. Medallic alignment. Obv: Letters GM, for General Motors, with thin raised rim. Rev: Letters MD, for Manufacturing Development Department, with thin raised rim. PCGS has incorrectly mounted this coin with the reverse up in the holder. Original golden-brown surfaces retain outlines of faded, yet still vivid mint orange color to the letters. Scattered carbon spots, especially in the upper obverse field, account for the lower Mint State rating from PCGS. There are no significant marks, however, and the in hand appearance is pleasingly smooth.
As with the example offered above, this rare GM/MD experimental cent was struck on one of the first prototype roller presses using dies created by GM. One of only two known, and making its first appearance for public sale. PCGS# 810954. From the Estate of a General Motors Technical Center Employee. Pictured on page 6 of (our) Bowers and Merenas Rare Coin Review, No. 107, September/October 1995.
