1903 Bas Relief Plaque of Horatio Hathaway Brewster. By James Earle Fraser. Marble. Choice Extremely Fine. 13.5 inches x 10.5 inches. Exquisitely framed in contemporary dark oak, with ornamentation around the marble as well as beading along the edge. Overall dimensions of 20.75 inches x 17.75 inches. Cut into white marble that has taken on a pleasant creamy tone, without visible chips or problems of any kind. A substantial piece both in size and significance to Fraser, as this early work has been identified as that which focused attention on the sculptors exceptional talent, earning him further commissions that delivered him his eventual great fame. This is clearly a private commission that would not have had widespread commercial appeal. As such, we have no other examples in any form in our archives, though our consignor reported smaller versions in bronze. This is represented in the Smithsonian, but only as a photograph of a slightly different version, perhaps a trial in plaster. Impressive and extremely rare in this form, if not unique. An important work from the hand of one of Americas most esteemed sculptors. <strong>Due to the size and nature of this lot, additional shipping charges apply.
