1926-S Oregon Trail Memorial. MS-67+ (NGC). Among the more vividly toned examples of the type that we have ever handled. Snowy-white luster at the centers is framed by intense bands of rainbow color on each side. Truly spectacular to examine in hand and worthy of the strongest bids. Authorized by Act of Congress dated May 17, 1926, commemorative half dollars of this type were intended to honor those who made the Westward journey via the Oregon Trail and to raise funds to preserve points along the trail. The work of James Earle and Laura Gardin Fraser, this design has become a classic. A Native American superimposed over a map of the United States and with hand outstretched in an attempt to halt Westward migration is on one side, while the other exhibits a team of oxen pulling a Conestoga wagon over a hill. Mintages and distribution were generous at first, especially in 1926, but dwindled considerably toward the series end in 1939. The 1926-S, represented here, was produced to the extent of 100,055 pieces but 17,000 were eventually melted in 1933, leaving a net distribution of 83,055. In the finest Mint State grades, the 1926-S is elusive and few exhibit the breathtaking color of this superior specimen. PCGS# 9341. NGC ID: BYH7. NGC Census: 25; 23 finer (MS-68+ * finest).
