1802/1 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. BD-7. Rarity-5. High Overdate. AU Details--Scratch (PCGS). A frosty to modestly semi-reflective example that delivers razor sharp striking detail to all but a few isolated design features. Wisps of pale rose iridescence to otherwise olive-gold color, the in hand appearance is quite smooth overall. We do note faint hairlines, however, and a few pin scratches on the obverse explain the PCGS qualifier. Of the eight known die marriages of the 1802 half eagle, all are overdates, and BD-7 is among the scarcer varieties. John W. Dannreuther (2006) opines that only 3,000 to 6,000 examples were coined from this die pairing, survivors numbering just 50 to 65 pieces in all grades.
