Both sides are lustrous with a soft, satiny finish from the dies. Vivid deep golden-apricot color and razor sharp striking detail are sure to please, and the appearance is exceptionally smooth for the grade. By 1855, only the second year of production for this curious gold denomination, the three-dollar gold piece was not popular in commerce. Circulation strike production at the Philadelphia Mint that year dropped to 50,555 coins, as opposed to 138,618 coins struck in that facility the year before. The 1855 is still a relatively obtainable issue by the standards of the series, and it is a popular coin for type purposes.
