New York--New York. Undated (1829-1833) John Barker. HT-230, Low-338, W-NY-260-10b, Musante GW-124, Baker-511. Rarity-7. Brass. Plain Edge. MS-63 (NGC). 19 mm. Pierced for suspension. The reverse is rotated slightly more than 90 degrees counterclockwise from medallic alignment. Beautiful brassy-olive surfaces exhibit mottled steely-russet overtones on the reverse. Sharply struck with an impressive satin to modestly semi-reflective finish from the dies. This elusive type is unplated in the 2004 edition of the Rulau reference on U.S. tokens. While John Ford had three examples, the finest was certified EF-45 by NGC at the time of our August 2013 sale, and the other two were impaired EFs. This is the finest and only Mint State specimen that we can ever recall handling, and it comes highly recommended for inclusion in an advanced Hard Times token collection or Washingtoniana cabinet.
