The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, $100, remainder note, 1.3.1896, serial number 48796, red and pale blue, the back orange, fresh and unmarked, a lovely specimen. The central panel reading Promises to pay the Bearer on demand at its Office here One Hundred Dollars or the equivalent in the Currency of the Island, value received. Perforated "Cancelled" vertically four times. Printed on unwatermarked banknote paper, by Barclay & Fry, London. This note shows the border designs of the post-1893 style, with a bolder pattern and the M points facing up; with the printed signature of Jackson, the Chief Manager, (Pick 147br), PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated (Perforated Cancelled, Previously Mounted). No issued example of the 1865 to 1899 types is believed to exist in private hands and the only other specimen note the cataloguer has seen does not have a printed serial number. The only example known and in lovely conditon!
