Obverse: Garnished shields reading SHANGHAI / JUBILEE / W. H.. SHORT NOVEMBER / 17 1893 in five diagonal bands; two inward-facing dragons as supporters; in background, ship sailing right upon the seas, with rising sun upon the horizon; Reverse: Three coats-of-arms arranged in pattern, with wreath of roses, thistles, and shamrocks below. <em>Edge</em>: Engraving: PRESENTED BY THE SHANGHAI MUNICIPALITY, with clasp and loop attached at the top. Fairly RARE and interesting, these medals were presented to important individuals involved in Shanghai at the time of the jubilee. </p> <em>According to an 1894 directory chronicle for China and Japan (p. 194), W. H. Short was a manager at Hall & Holtz, Ltd, a company which served as provision importers, stationers, wine and spirit merchants, furniture manufacturers, jewelers, drapers, outfitters, tailors, upholsterers, house furnishers, bakers, &c., &c.; office and stores, Nanking Road; steam saw mills and furniture factory, Soochow Road; bakeries, Szechuen Road and Minghong Road. According to the newspaper The Colonies and India from the 22 May 1897 issue (p. 17), Short passed away ...in Shanghai the other day, aged 54. </em></p>
