ITALY. Calabria. Tarentum. AR Didrachm (Nomos) (6.55 gms), ca. 280-272 B.C. NGC Ch AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 5/5. HGC-1, 884; Vlasto-750-2; HN Italy-1008. Obverse: Nude youth riding horse right, holding reins and crowning horse with wreath; monogram to left, [ΔAMYΛOΣ below]; Reverse: Phalanthos, holding cornucopia, trident, and shield with hippocamp, riding dolphin left. This nice example of the popular "boy and rider" type retains a luster and flashiness about it 2,200 years after it was struck. Nicely centered, the strike is very attractive, though the flan is a bit misshapen. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.
